In Where the Light Rests, Fiona Barrett-Clark turns to the fleeting interval between day and night, when the familiar structures of suburban life are transformed by colour, shadow and light.

Developed through repeated journeys across the suburban peripheries of Sydney, the paintings emerge from close observation. The setting sun reflected across the surface of a car, traffic lights held against a darkening street, the moon rising behind a neighbour’s roofline. Telegraph poles, kerbs, power lines and trees become compositional anchors within scenes that locate a cinematic intensity in the everyday.

Barrett-Clark lives and works on Dharug land, where the built environment sits in close proximity to remnant bushland. This threshold between habitation and nature has long informed her practice. Here, landscape is encountered not as distant vista, but as something immediate and lived: a familiar street momentarily altered by the changing conditions of light.

Working in oil on plywood, Barrett-Clark reduces each scene to its essential elements. Silhouettes and gradients are set against saturated fields of colour, while the natural grain of the timber remains visible. Rooftops, treelines and power lines become darkened forms against luminous skies, shifting between the recognisable and the strange.

Across the series, Barrett-Clark reconsiders the language of Australian landscape painting through the suburban edge. The sublime is brought closer to home, found in the tension between an expansive sky and the structures beneath it; between the natural and constructed; between what is seen every day and what is suddenly seen anew.

There is no search for spectacle in these works. Instead, Barrett-Clark asks what can be revealed through sustained attention to place. Dusk becomes both subject and condition: brief, heightened and continually changing.

Fiona Barrett-Clark graduated from The Sydney Gallery School in 1998, majoring in painting, and has since presented ten solo exhibitions. She has been represented by Saint Cloche since 2020.

“Where the Light Rests is about pausing in that fleeting window between light and dark and noticing where, just for a moment, the light chooses to stay.”
