Curator Kitty Clark envisioned 'The Modern Muse' at Saint Cloche to honour women's historic accomplishments during International Women’s Week 2024. In 2023, as reported by Forbes, women achieved groundbreaking milestones across diverse fields from Nobel prize winners to astronauts, indicating continual progress toward gender equality and shattering longstanding barriers in roles traditionally dominated by men.

The shift from patriarchy to matriarchy brings potential for peaceful, economically balanced societies with equal relationships. Despite the need for healing after years of suppression, the misconception about self-care must be addressed to empower matriarchs and contribute to global healing.

Our culture has taught us to assume the normal human condition is one of vanity and exaggerated self-regard. But for many of the us the opposite is true: we suffer from an excessively self-critical vision of who we might be; we are achingly alive to our defects and to all that others could perceive as wrong with our characters.

Cindy Kavanagh, founder of Sydney’s 'The Modern Muse', celebrates reaching ‘level 50’ by photographing 50 women on the cusp of or recently turned 50. Creating unique portraits and stories of women viewed through the lens of feminine archetypes.

Gwyneth Paltrow says 50 needs a ‘rebrand’, and in essence that is what this project has become.

We can fade from view as we age, sometimes to the point of invisibility. Sometimes it is an attitude all around that still struggles to acknowledge a woman of wisdom. It is a rebellious act to honour oneself in this way. We women have looked at ourselves far too long through the eyes of the harsh critic.

A captivating portrait captures the rich tapestry of human experiences, emotions, and perspectives. It tells a story that lingers long after the shutter has closed.

The Modern Muse

“I turned 50 last year, and (rather than a party) to combat my own anxieties around this life transition, thought I’d celebrate all the incredible women I know and see bridging 50. It’s a powerful life transition traversing through menopause, and women have really wanted to share their stories, so the project seems to have taken on a life of its own.

Conversations over numerous cups of tea & handmade chocolates from Byron Bay, listening to women’s stories about what’s important to them now, how they feel about aging, how they see themselves and how they want to be seen.

We women have looked at ourselves far too long through the eyes of the harsh critic. A portrait with The Modern Muse is dreaming ourselves anew. We take the trouble to find out who and what inspires our client (our muse), and through collaboration and kind imagination, discover and highlight what is beautiful for women to see themselves benevolently as they truly are.

It’s an opportunity to reflect, curate and create an artwork of this ‘muse’ as a vision board to hang on the wall, and have visible, this new muse to call in this new chapter of life at 50, Second Spring.”

Cindy Kavanagh is a Sydney-based fashion and fine art photographer. Fresh out of her Master of Art degree from UNSW Art & Design (2020), Kavanagh brings her decades in fashion photography and global TVC production to everyday-woman and girls. Through authentic fashion editorial style portraits, including professional makeup, styling, wardrobe, and including Kavanagh’s hairdressing husband, 5 x Australia’s Session Stylist of the Year.

Lifting the veil on what goes into making the images in the glossies, Kavanagh guides her clients to discover their style, and take agency over their image. Kavanagh has developed 12 feminine archetypes or photo styles to inspire as a starting point for her clients to imagine their own story. By listening to and collaborating with her clients on mood-boards, reference, and weaving their story into the concepts, they arrive at a richer, more meaningful portrait.

“Through my years of experience, my MFA and work in fashion photography and film in the commercial industry, I found myself thinking about beauty differently. I want to find the essence of beauty within. I consider The Modern Muse a resource for everyday-women and girls to empower themselves through this full-service experience.”
