Welcome to Max Doyle and his Scrap Book aka Scrapdoyle

Saint Cloche is excited to reveal to you a sensational collection of culture-absorbed work from accomplished Australian photographer Max Doyle, renowned for his fashion imagery and striking portraiture.

Max first discovered his passion during a period of great change: the development of the grunge era in early 90’s London. It was during this time, the photographer began to produce dynamic interpretations of contemporary counterculture, exploring the ways in which postmodern art and fashion collide. Here, poignant beauty coupled with a kind of elegant rebellion characterised his unmistakable style.

Spanning more than 30 years, the lo-fi scrapbook works are an intriguing and intimate glimpse into both the work and personal life of this iconic fashion photographer.

This exhibition will be ‘Scrapdoyle’s’ much anticipated Sydney solo presentation. There will also be 36 one off edition mini prints from Max’s treasured scrapbooks.

Scrap Doyle

These pages are from my personal scrapbooks dating from the eighties to the present.

I first started scrapbooking early in my career as a photographer. My notebooks are a series of private visual diaries (in the form of Moleskin books) documenting my career in a way, packed with Polaroids, the by-product of fashion shoots in the ‘90s, and a little later a place to preserve photos that I’d developed, as well as handprints, negatives, and sketches.

I am now making public a selection of my scrapbook entries, where pages from notebooks have been blown up into large photographic prints.

~ Max Doyle

Max Doyle is a well-known Australian photographer whose name is synonymous fashion spreads and personality portraits. Having worked extensively throughout London and New York, Max then returned to Sydney in 1999 to launch the iconic art photography magazine, doingbird in collaboration with creative director Malcolm Watt. This independent biannual title amassed an immediate following for its unguarded approach to culture and style, featuring a diverse body of work from celebrated photographers such as Terry Richardson and Alasdair McLellan, together with cover stars such as Liya Kebede, Anja Rubik and Natasha Poly.

Max also regularly produces a number of commercial campaigns and continues to contribute to fashion publications. In his long-established career, Max has worked between London, New York and Australia, and has captured the faces of many celebrity performers, including Billie Eilish, Emily Ratajkowski, Travis Scott and Margot Robbie.
