Saint Cloche is proud to present On The Banks Of Dreams, a new solo exhibition by Christopher Jewitt, marking an evocative return to and reinvention of the artist’s most recognisable visual languages. In this compelling body of work, Jewitt composes a series of abstract paintings that amalgamate elements from his past styles, drawing on memory and intuition to forge a vivid, dreamlike topography.

Combining airbrush, oil stick, oil paint and acrylic markers, Jewitt continues his exploration of mark making and gesture - this time allowing areas of raw canvas to emerge, creating a dynamic interplay between presence and absence, control and spontaneity. These paintings are rhythmic, textural, and deeply atmospheric.

For the first time at Saint Cloche, Jewitt will also present a curated selection of ceramic sculptures. These handbuilt, organic and geometric forms act as tactile extensions of his painted work - otherworldly figurines that blur the boundary between abstraction and figuration. The surface of each piece is scored with his signature markings, imbuing them with a sense of energy and reverie.

“This body of work came together intuitively - like dredging up fragments from a dream,” says Jewitt.

“I wasn’t trying to control the outcome too tightly. Instead, I let my materials - airbrush, oil stick, clay - guide the direction.

There’s a sense of returning, of pulling threads from my earlier works, but also of drifting forward into something stranger and more abstract. The ceramics especially feel like artefacts from another realm - familiar yet unplaceable.”

Christopher Jewitt is a multidisciplinary artist based in Naarm/Melbourne whose practice spans painting and sculpture. While completing his BA in Photography at RMIT majoring in Drawing, Jewitt received a scholarship to China, where he was awarded Top Documentary Photographer at Nankai University.

Since then, he has independently funded and organised residencies across Murcia (Spain), Miyazaki (Japan), Chalais (France), Paphos (Cyprus), and Palermo (Italy). These immersive and often remote environments have fuelled the frenetic, instinctive image-making that defines his practice.

His work is held in numerous private and public collections. Saint Cloche proudly represents Christopher Jewitt.
