Saint Cloche warmly welcomes back, Indivi Sutton for her fourth solo reveal, ‘AS I AM’. Based between Sydney and New York, Indivi works with natural pigment powders that she applies in fine translucent layers on raw linen.

“AS I AM " is an exploration of the human experience and serves as an invitation to simply be. Founded in the teachings of Rudolf Steiner and imbued with the Indivi's deeply emotive connection to colour as the expression of an inner language.

Indivi's practice originates from her education at the Rudolf Steiner School in New York City, where the understanding of colour was intrinsic to the ethos; the seasons provided a deep understanding of how light, and colour penetrate our being. The paintings are of raw linen and pigment powders, where the pigment imbibes the raw linen, allowing the colour its own expression. The colours that emerge onto the canvases for each work are formed from deep contemplation and observation of Indivi’s surrounding world, the universal language of absence and presence, remembrance, and of hope and healing and essentially being human.

As I Am

“Within the depths of our being resides the inner "I”: a silent yet omnipresent connection of humanity. To truly engage with and serve nature, one must first attune their inner self.

Through the intricate web of our senses, the inner "I" exerts its influence, weaving together the threads of sensory experiences into a rich tapestry of understanding. With every sight beheld, every sound heard, every touch felt, it delves deeper into the labyrinth of self-discovery, unravelling the mysteries of our innermost being and the world that surrounds us. Moreover, its reach extends beyond the realm of the tangible and the perceptible to reveal an intertwining with the very essence of our existence—the breath.

In the cadence of inhalation and exhalation, the inner "I" finds resonance, synchronising with the primal rhythm that sustains life.”

Indivi (b.2000, New York, USA) resides in both Sydney and New York. Indivi's practice originates from her education at the Rudolf Steiner School in New York City, where she was introduced to an enchantment of colour which has been the foundation of a deep desire to explore its interpretation and evocativeness in her painting.

Indivi works with natural pigment powders that imbibe the raw linen to create paintings that are resonant of experience and emotion being frequencies of the invisible. The tenor of Indivi’s work explores the nuance of emotional interdependence, the relationship between painting and memory.

Indivi made her debut at Sydney Contemporary 2022 in a group show with Saint Cloche Gallery. Her practice has been recognised by both the Rudolf Steiner College.

Indivi is represented by Saint Cloche Gallery in Sydney and Ki Smith Gallery NY.
