Saint Cloche warmly welcomes Leanne Xiu Williams, an emerging artist based in Sydney with an arresting solo show of still life beauties – ‘Vessels’.
Vessels are more than just objects; their function and form suggests that beneath the surface, they hold and contain something beyond themselves. They are wonderful metaphors for the way in which objects in our everyday lives hold meaning. They contain layered histories and stories which are shaped by our engagement with them. Objects can also characterise a place or person – they reveal much about a person’s interests and habits.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Leanne Xiu Williams is an emerging artist who lives and works on Gadigal land (Sydney). She is a self-taught painter and Art History graduate from the University of Sydney. She is inspired by people and the way that they relate to their surroundings and one another, and she explores this across a range of subjects, including still life, portraiture, and figurative work.
Through her artmaking she hopes to capture intimate moments in time by paying careful attention to the interplay of light and shadow and creating evocative tonal compositions. It is through these material qualities that her work alludes to experiences beyond representation, invoking memories, dreams, and sensations.
She was recently featured in The Design Files’ article ‘10 Emerging, Affordable Artists You Need to Have On Your Watchlist’ for 2023, and she has an upcoming exciting collaboration with Two Good Co where her commissioned work will be featured in Two Good’s Cookbook III which will be available for Xmas 2023.
Saint Cloche Gallery proudly represents Leanne Xiu Williams.
As an artist, I’m principally inspired by people and the way that we relate to one another and our surroundings. Being self-taught, I’m often driven by curiosity and a love for the materiality of painting, whether in the gestural application of paint, experimenting with different surfaces or stretching the canvas myself. Likewise, the material qualities of items I come across in my everyday life have naturally become objects of curiosity which I’ve explored throughout these works.
In this way, my latest body of work ‘Vessels’ is a homage to the still life genre and how it can capture human presence, narrative, and the objects we surround ourselves with.
