S-MILE
S–MILE is an experimental collaborative project by the Sydney-based artists EGYBOY and Angus Gardner that will playfully explore the porous boundaries between street art, contemporary ceramics, painting and fashion.
All areas of the gallery will be activated for this project —walls, floors and plinths, including a large-scale in-situ wall work and totemic ceramic sculptures that take their form and energy from the outside street — subverting the usual hierarchies between ‘high’ and ‘low’ art. Both artists are stable mates at Square One Studios located in inner-city Sydney and draw inspiration directly from the urban environment.
EGYBOY
Lithuanian-born artist EGYBOY (a.k.a. ‘Art Cowboy) works primarily as an illustrator across a range of diverse mediums and disciplines, including street art, design and fashion. His style, typically monochromatic and inflected with acidic honesty, could be described as post-internet or outsider, and which the artist himself has described as ‘Whateverism’.
He is also the author of two books – Basta (2012) and My Flag is Back! (2015) — which were published to accompany exhibitions at The Art Park, Byron Bay and the Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius.
ANGUS GARDNER
A recent graduate of Sydney’s University of New South Wales Art & Design and whose work has featured in group shows including ‘Slow Burn’ (2014) and ‘In Residence’ (2016), Angus Gardner’s artistic maxim is ‘Relax & Strive’.
Says the artist: ‘My work combines ceramic techniques and painterly decoration to investigate and critique my personal encounters with human character, behaviour and energy. The concept of movement is also important in the way the forms are constructed and their ability to encompass and occupy space.’
OPENING NIGHT
