EXHIBITION VIDEO WALKTHROUGH: Watch on IGTV
Julia Trybala is a young artist based in Melbourne, Australia. Drawing inspiration from personal experience and notions of intimacy, Julia makes works about people. Julia works with a range of painting and drawing mediums and surfaces – her work is carefully composed, even-planed, forthright and evocative.
“‘Room’ is a new series of paintings – closely cropped, tender, and at times abject portraits and figures make up this new body of work. Stylised nudes are cramped in space, tangled with an openness and vulnerability offered through their gaze. Arched eyebrows, an engorged red foot, a rounded curve looking over a shoulder; Julia creates characters through painting that are dually self-portraits and portraits of her surroundings.”
Since completing a Bachelor of Fine Art at RMIT University in 2016, Julia has exhibited around Australia in numerous group and solo shows in galleries from Geelong, Sydney and Melbourne to Perth. She has also been featured in many art publications. She is well-known for her audacious depiction of girls and women in strong and sometimes moody colour palettes. Ambiguous, and voyeuristic fleeting glimpses of contemplative moments.
