“Nature’s creative power is far beyond man’s instinct of destruction.”
– Jules Verne
There has been much to say about 2020 – a lot of it unprintable! Yes, it has been rough to say the least, and it has felt like things were falling apart this year, but perhaps it’s actually a new beginning – a correction rather than a catastrophe.
For this year’s End of Year Show we dare to hope, stay positive and forge a new path. We take inspiration and encouragement from the sacred geometry of the Nautilus Shell, the Golden Mean, a symbol for inner beauty and patterns of nature – a symbol of life and internal harmony. The chambers of the nautilus shell are symbolic of the stages each individual passes through life. The spiral itself is a symbol of creation, movement, fluidity and evolution.
We look to one of the greats in Bio-architecture who worshipped and expressed ‘Nature’s Manifesto’ in his creations, Mexican architect, Javier Senosiain and his ground-breaking project – Nautilus House.
The great oceans or water worlds where everything in nature manifests and springs forth and ancient rock formations and fossils, natural soundscapes and circadian rhythms of day and night all synthesise as sources of endless creative motivation for our artists.
At the end of each year Saint Cloche presents a Grand Finale group show. In the spirit of collaboration, NAUTILUS is the 6th edition curated by Saint Cloche Founder, Kitty Clark is designed to create dialogue and promote and celebrate the diverse, creative talent of a special group of Australian artist’s that have been handpicked to illuminate the curatorial concept.
This month-long exhibition is the pinnacle of Saint Cloche’s 2020 exhibition schedule and for what has been an unexpected, unprecedented year, the gallery has still managed to blaze a new trail, becoming a virtual vanguard on the Australian art scene. NAUTILUS is a salute to the Saint Cloche community and a feisty ‘chin-up’ as we brave-through, eternally positive and optimistic, clinging to all silver-linings that 2020 has brought us, into a new, evolving terrain. Saint Cloche would like to thank everyone in their community for amazing support throughout the year, especially the artists. 2021 – bring it!
“2020 has all the feels marking the beginning of a new era and I felt compelled to delve into the origins of the world we live in, questioning what is still to come, trying to go with the flow and not constrict. I’ve been soul-searching – the meaning of ‘Sanctuary’ and reflecting on what the future will be like for our children? Nautilus is an ode to the simple, raw elements experienced in daily life that give us hope and positivity.”
– Kitty Clark
Inspiration leaps from our vast terrains to the great oceans, as we sail the changing currents into the great unknown, awaiting to be united with loved ones from afar and dream of travelling once again to foreign lands, there remains a vibrant world yet to be discovered. The ‘Nautilus Ephemeris’ series is a collaborative visual diary featuring treasured fragments of life’s longing for itself and the connection we are all searching for.
Nautilus Ephemeris:
All thanks and kudos to film maker Andrew Grune, and Endgame for sound and very special thanks to Evi O.
