JUNGLE / ANIMOLOGY
Paintings by Evi O. Ceramics by Jan Howlin
11 – 22 October 2017
Opening Night Wednesday 11 October 6-8pm
This exciting new duo show brings together two popular artists focused on humanity. Together, they deliver an exploration of the urban jungle and the people and animals that inhabit it – both from a broad perspective and from the inside out.
Realised in two dimensions and in three, JUNGLE / ANIMOLOGY offer a world of seductive colour, inventive form and lively energy, where we find whimsy and suggestion springing from every bold mark and tactile curve.
These artists offer two highly personal ways of looking at the oldest subject on earth, life, presented in a fresh and contemporary light.
JUNGLE. EVI O.
In Evi O’s reduced, abstracted, and finely balanced colour works we see suggestions of the city where we live. Here we see a moon, and there the branches of a tree stretching aloft. These works remind us of the life around us, and the contemporary environment we have shaped to suit us.
Through paint, Evi O continues to explore the use of dominant abstract shapes, although the compositions she presents here are broadly suggestive of animal forms. The creatures she depicts, however, are symbolic of people in her life, and this affords her an intimacy with her subjects that infuses the images with emotional resonance.
ANIMOLOGY. JAN HOWLIN.
Jan Howlin’s ceramic works developed from her interest in form as a vehicle for evocation, symbolism and connection.
From a desire to translate the body in a different way, she focused initially on the internal architecture of life forms – the pipes and organs that act as the transport system in the body – and in several works a parallel is drawn between the inner workings of trees and the blood that flows in our veins.
In extending these elements and adding allusions to various animal characteristics, she developed this small series of ‘heartworks’ and ‘organisms,’ which have been brought to life through her distinctive use of line, colour, texture and form.
