To coincide with the launch of ‘DAY TRIP’ her first book, sought-after Sydney-based artist and designer Evi O returns to the gallery, this time along with co-author and partner Andrew Grune. Together they pay a fitting ode to nature, inspired by their travels writing this book. The exhibition will unveil a new series of Evi’s bold, richly-hued paintings and Andrew’s magnetic photographs exploring ideas of future artificial intelligence.
DAY TRIP is the first of a series of books the pair will write for Thames & Hudson. As the global pandemic has given rise to a situation where people are rediscovering natural areas close to the metropolis, easy DAY TRIP getaways that are close to home but away enough to be able to unplug from the rat-race of our everyday are becoming essential for our wellbeing.
DAY TRIP’s bottom line is about the importance of connecting to nature, getting back to basics, the outdoor benefits to health & wellbeing, mental health, de-stressing, forest-bathing, being responsible guardians of the environment, supporting local tourism, businesses, reconnecting with loved ones and appreciating our own backyard. The benefits of spending time immersed in nature are endless!
About Evi O
Evi O spent her childhood in Surabaya, Indonesia, and is now living in Sydney. She divides her time among running her own design studio, practising her art, which is well-known to the Saint Cloche community, and walking in nature.
A tune under the sun,
A dive into the ocean,
A rest behind a waterfall,
A maze through a forest,
A climb above a canyon,
A cleanse of the soul.
In Day Trip, I bring back the calming energy I found within nature. It has been a sanctuary that balances my demanding day-to-day. In this collection, I hope to illustrate solace in repetition, which I often find while on the road. A row of big trees keep me humble and a formation of small birds keeps me curious.”
– Evi O.
About Andrew Grune
Andrew Grune was born in Sydney and has spent most of his adult life living in London where he co-founded the cult fashion laboratory Primitive, worked as an art director and taught at the London College of Fashion. He has exhibited and curated in London, Berlin, Tokyo, Melbourne and Sydney. This is his first exhibition of art under his own name.
A relic exists but may be ignored or misunderstood. In this collection, I wanted to express the unknown meaning a relic might represent. Reflecting upon my recent exodus from London after 12 years being away from Australia, I find myself questioning the concept of time, loss and metamorphosis.
The ideation is expressed through investigating discarded human-made relics discovered by an unknown intelligence interpreting, documenting and repurposing them eons into the future.
Found during photographing my first book Day Trip Sydney, the images capture the beauty of observing the norm of context, and what it means to exist.”
– Andrew Grune.
