A GROUP SHOW
CURATED BY KITTY WONG
20 December 2016 – 29 January 2017
Opening Night 20 December, 6-8pm
This Summer Saint Cloche transports you to the futuristic city of Brasília, capital of the vibrant country and the birthplace of Brazilian modernism. Inspired by the graphic poetry, minimalist aesthetic and utopian outlook of Brazil in the 50s and 60s, this group show brings together 10 artists to celebrate a futuristic city of the past that is entirely relevant today.
Referencing the sinuous architecture of Oscar Niemeyer, the futurist philosophy of city planners and the highly spirited Brazilian lifestyle, Brasilia is a contemporary reimagining of one of the world’s most breathtaking examples of urban planning. A homage to Brazilian style and design, a celebration of summer and creative freedom, Brasilia captures the unique feeling and singular energy that is endemic to the country’s culture.
A lush and vibrant palette references the exotic wildlife and verdant flora of the Amazonian rainforests, iridescent sunsets and glistening bodies on the beach in the heat of summer. Sculptures, objet d’arts and textiles capture the organic forms of Brasilia’s surroundings: the bold, curvilinear landscape of mountain ranges, clouds, and rivers, as well as the contours of the female Brazilian body that so transfixed Niemeyer. Paintings throb with the energy of Brazilian street life and street culture, referencing movements such as Concretism and Internationalism as well as the progressive Brazilian beach culture. This December, be the first to acquire a Brasilia inspired painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics or objet d’art as a Christmas gift – or for yourself.
Whatever your motivation, make like the Brazilians and come to Saint Cloche ready to mix, play, mingle and be inspired.
