Born in South Africa, Heidi Melamed lives and works in Sydney. An emerging artist, with a degree in Graphic Design and a MArt UNSW Art & Design, her approach to art-making is quite disciplined having a strong design influence. Exhibition history includes: Blacktown City Art Prize 2012, COFA Annual Exhibition 2013, Waverley Art prize 2015, Mosman Art prize 2015, Showcase Art Edit Issue #9 Autumn 2016.
Her practice explores ways in which colour, light, layering, overlapping and transparency, work as organizing aesthetic principles. The construction of shadows in staged landscapes continues an ongoing and enduring thematic preoccupation of arrangement and composition in her artistic practice. Commissioning a florist to create floral arrangements in the Japanese Ikebana style, these sculptural floral arrangements were then lit with various light sources and photographed resulting in a series of photographs capturing the shadows that were cast onto the walls and ceilings.
